2021 Escape Your Goodreads Hoard Challenge

10/30/2020

If you are anything like me, your Want-to-Read folder on Goodreads keeps growing instead of getting smaller. Each year, I keep telling myself that I should not add any books to that folder and each year I fail after a month or two. In 2021, it is my big goal to finally tackle that pile. I'm already participating in reading challenges, but I wanted to create my own. To keep myself accountable, I will post here at the end of each month, which of the prompts I finished that month. The goal is to complete all 52 prompts by the end of 2021. Feel free to use these prompts to challenge yourself to tackle your Goodreads Want-to-Read folder.

There is only one rule: All books must have been on your Want-to-Read shelf before January 1, 2021 (except for prompt #4)!

Here are the 52 prompts:

1. Oldest book on the random GR list
  • Step 1: Select the number of books you want to read for this challenge.
  • Step 2: Go to the “My Books” tab on the top of the Goodreads Page.
  • Step 3: Bring up your “Want-To-Read” shelf.
  • Step 4: On the bottom of the page in the middle, go to the “sort” field and select “Random.” Goodreads will generate a random list of books for you!
  • Step 5: Select the oldest book (date added) of the first 10 books on that random list.
2. Newest book on the random GR list
  • Look at the list you generated for prompt 1. Select the newest book (date added) of the first 10 books on that random list.
3. Read a book on your TBR that you own.
4. Read a book you added to your TBR within the last 6 months.
5. Read a book on your TBR with a building on the cover.
6. Read a book on your TBR that was published the year or decade you were born.
7. Read a book on your TBR that has the MPG Classics.
8. Randomize your TBR on GR again (see prompt No. 1 for instructions) and read the first book on that list.
9. Look at the number of pages of books in your Want-To-Read. Read the book on your TBR that is exactly that number. (e.g., if you have a Want-To-Read of 7 pages, read book No. 7 for this prompt).
10. Go to one of your friends' GR page, click on "[your friend's name]'s Bookshelves," then click on "Compare books" next to the search box to compare your bookshelf to theirs. Select one of the books you have in common.
11. Go to one of your friends' GR page, click on "[your friend's name]'s Bookshelves," then click on "Compare books" next to the search box to compare your bookshelf to theirs. Select one of the books you DO NOT have in common.
12. Read a book on your TBR with a cover you love.
13. Read a book on your TBR that helps you complete one of your yearly, quarterly, or monthly reading challenges.
14. Read a book on your TBR set in a country that is not your own.
15. Read a book on your TBR that you added because of the cover.
16. Sort your TBR by cover. Read the first book.
17. Read a book on your TBR that one of your friends or family members chooses.
18. Read a book that you previously didn't finished, but want to give a second chance. If you don't have a book like that, read a book on your TBR from your least favorite genre.
19. Read a book on your TBR by your favorite author.
20. Read a book on your TBR that is not the first book in a series.
21. Read a book on your TBR where at least one of the author's initials is the same as one of your initials.
22. Read a book on your TBR with a title where the first letter of each word in the title can be found in your first and last name (3-word minimum). Each letter can only be used as often as they are in your name, e.g., if you have one E in your name, but your title has two E's, you cannot use that book.
23. Read a book on your TBR that you keep hearing about and believe you should read.
24. Read a book on your TBR with an animal on the cover.

This part of my blog is all about books and reading! I believe in reading aloud to my kids and being creative with books (e.g., in the form of Bible journaling).
My goal for 2021 is --just as in 2020-- to continue to minimize my electronics time (mindless TV watching, binge-watching shows on Netflix, game apps, social media scrolling). Instead, I will continue to replace those hours with reading challenges, audiobooks, and reading time with my kids.
